The Ministry of Inner-City and Zongo Development(MICZD) in collaboration some retired and award-winning footballers in the Zongo communities across the country is working to establish a Zongo football league to motivate and unearth talents in these communities.
It is in view of this, that the Ministry has developed a strategy to tap into the enormous potentials for the development of youth soccer in the inner-city and Zongo communities.
The only three Ghanaian players to have won the African Best footballer of the year awards namely Ibrahim Sunday, Golden Boy Abdul Razak and Abedi Ayew Pele were all products of the Zongo's and are assisting the Ministry for the development of these talents in the Zongos.
Already the Ministry has begun consultations with some of these old players in the Zongos to assist in the development of these enormous talents.
Already officials from the Ministry a couple of months ago met with ‘Golden Boy’ Abdul Razak and some of his colleagues in Kumasi to chart the way forward for the Ministry’s vision for youth sports development in the Zongo communities.
It is the vision of the Minister, Dr. Abdul Mustapha Hamid to promote these ideas in the Zongo for the development of talents.
‘It even expected that developments of these talents will generate foreign exchange for the country if a handful of the youth get teams to play for in abroad.
According to him, he had resumed talks with the old footballers to make this vision comes to fruition in the Zongo communities as part of the human development mandate of the Ministry.
As part of these initiatives a league would be developed where winners of the Inter-Community Gala played in the Zongo communities across the ten regions of the country after Ramadan will come to Accra to slug it out for an overall winner.
He said winners of the league will be given consolation prizes and talents developed in the process
The Ministry has embarked on the construction of football pitches and green parks in selected communities across the country.
It is also expected that these pitches will serve other purposes such as emergency assembly points (in the case of disasters), children playing grounds and social gatherings such as Eid prayers, weddings, church conventions among others.
These pitches can also be used to promote regenerative health through organized aerobic sessions and other games.
The Ministry explained that phase one of this initiative, the construction of Astro Turf parks is ongoing in three locations, namely, Madina-Accra in the Greater Accra, Kibi in the Eastern Region and Walewale in the Northern Region.
In a similar vein, the construction of five green parks to serve a similar purpose is also ongoing in Bolgatanga in the Upper East, Salaga in the North, Yeji in the Brong Ahafo, Tafo-Kumasi in the Ashanti region and Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.
The Minister just last week Friday 24, 2018 broke grounds for the construction of Dr. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu AstroTurf at Fadaama also in the Greater Accra Region.
