The Minister for Inner-City and Zongo Development has disclosed that the Ministry will be building ten new multi-purpose recreational centres otherwise known as astroturfs for ten Zongo communities across the country.
The beneficiary Zongo communities are Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, Kwaben, Manhysia South and Bantama all in the Ashanti Region, Essikado-Ketan in the Western Region, Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region and Damango in the newly created Savannah Region.
The sector Minister Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid made this disclosure speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM’s afternoon flagship socio-political programme ‘Ekosi Sen hosted by Phillip Osei Bonsu.
He further disclosed that by the end month of October people living in these Zongo communities will see work being done on the ground.
The Minister who is also the Deputy Campaign Manager in -Charge of Message for the re-election bid or His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said plans are far advanced for the contractors to go site for the construction of the multi-purpose recreational centres.
He said the Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF), an agency under the Ministry has finalized the contractural agreements and very soon contractors will move to the various sites
According to him, the decision to construct the multi-purpose centres was at the call of the Zongo community heads and opinion leaders in these communities.
These projects were demanded by the people themselves and not a decision solely taken by the Ministry he explained.
He further explained that the leadership in these areas were consulted and they opted for the construction of the astroturfs.
He said the leaders in the Zongo communities are enthused the multi-purpose nature of the centres.
It can be used Maulid, Eid celebrations, conventions ground for churches, independence anniversary celebrations and football activities to unearth talents in the youth among others he noted.
He noted that many of the youth in these areas cannot afford the services of the gym and by providing them with these facilities it serves as a gym for the youth.
He said the projects when completed will be handed over to the respectively Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies(MMDAs) with the opinion leaders and the youth setting a management team to oversee the use of the facility.
